In the Gospel of Luke, we read about the Resurrected Lord Jesus appearing to two of his disciples as they were on their way to Emmaus. After he left them, “They asked each other, ‘Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?’” (Luke 24:32)
These unnamed disciples had left Jerusalem sad, confused, and discouraged as they looked to a future without their master. Jesus appears incognito on the way and explains the Scriptures. They recognize him over dinner and he vanished. Their evaluation as they look back with wonder at what just happened is our verse: their hearts burned within them!
Have you ever experienced the Lord Jesus teaching you something and then, suddenly you realize: “it was him!” – “he just showed me something!” – “my heart burned!”
When we read the Bible (even the obscure and confusing Old Testament bits), Jesus walks with us and will teach us if we would but pay attention to him.
Next time you read from the Bible begin with a prayer asking Jesus to teach you. Then be attentive and talk to Him as you read. Let Him stir your heart.
