If God is the Treasure, What’s Your Field?

“The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.”

Matthew 13:44

You and I are the treasure that God seeks for his possession. He gave His all to make mankind His own. In the same way, God wants to be your all. Jesus, at times, is like the treasure hidden in a field. We look for Him and catch only a glimpse of Him – a little sparkle of His great love for us, a promise of a rich and fulfilling life.

We get a glimpse of this treasure, and is sometimes hidden amidst the rocks of our circumstances, covered by the dirt and mud in our hearts and minds. As I pondered and discerned my calling (vocation), for a long time I felt like I only ever got a little glimpse of God’s immeasurable love and a little glimpse of what single life would be like with Him. Yet the sparkle and riches I did see absolutely captured me.

For me, the treasure, Jesus, was hidden in the field – celibate life. And in the hope to enjoy it fully, I sold all else and bought that field.

Ask yourself: What field – marriage, family, single, or celibate life – do you think God is putting before you, to find Him as your treasure in it? What do you have to give up to be able to buy that field?
