Help my unbelief!

“A man brought his son, who was possessed by a demon, to Jesus, and asked Jesus if he was able to heal him. Jesus said to him, … ‘All things are possible for one who believes.’ Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, ‘I believe; help my unbelief!’”

Mark 9:23-24

Do you ever doubt God’s power, God’s presence, or God’s goodness in your life? Do you worry that having such doubts makes you a feeble Christian, a displeasure to God, or a secret hypocrite?

Doubting is part of our broken human condition and Jesus understood this fully. When he says that “all things are possible for one who believes,” he is encouraging us to grow in our capacity to believe, to have faith in him.

But, in the meantime, he does not despise our small beginnings, our widow’s mite, our sincere offerings, for even faith the size of a mustard seed can move mountains.

Like the father of the boy in this passage, let us confess to the Lord our doubts, our fears, our wavering or our wobbly faith. Yes. I believe, Lord, but help me when I do not. Yes, I trust you, Lord, but help me where I do not.

Today, name one area where you struggle to believe in God’s power, his goodness, or his love and ask him to help you in your unbelief. The Lord understands and honors such a prayer.
