The Golden Standard of Leadership: Jesus the Good Shepherd

In John’s Gospel, we read the words of Jesus:

”I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”

John 10:11

Much is made in the world of secular leadership about the necessity of sacrifice. But often, what is upheld is personal sacrifice for the sake of personal gain. Many leaders are willing to pay any price… as long as the final investment is in their own account.

In John’s Gospel, Jesus presents a different model: a great leader serves for the sake of those being led, it’s for their good that he or she sacrifices… not for personal gain, fame, or fortune; but to bring life to others. This is the golden standard of leadership, and the standard our leader – Our Lord Jesus – modeled for us.

Don’t lead if you’re not willing to sacrifice. And don’t think you’re a good leader if you’re not willing to die for the sheep.

The average shepherd eats his flock. The good shepherd dies for them. Which are you?

  1. Hi James, I am a member of Jesus the Good Shepherd Covenant Community in Toronto. A very powerful message especially for Leaders. Means even more as your message is in sync with the name of our Community.
