Strengthening Relationships Through Love and Christian character

In Psalm 133, David writes:

“Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity!”

Psalm 133:1

Relationships that work well are a great blessing. But sometimes unity is hard. Sin, differences in perspectives, the way we handle our strengths and weaknesses, and our personality quirks can all damage relationships.

Paul told us to live peaceably with all, â€śas far as it depends on you.” (Romans 12:18) We cannot control the responses of others, but we must take responsibility for our own actions and attitudes. These ideas may help:

  • We are different parts of the body of Christ; we are designed to be different. Embrace differences.
  • James says, “Be quick to hear” (James 1:19). If we listen to understand, we can learn from those who disagree with us.
  • When people irritate us, we can use this irritation as an opportunity to grow in Christ-like character and love.
  • When people inconvenience us, we can remember that God calls us to serve.

Jesus prayed for our unity in John, chapter 17. What can we do today to build and protect it?
